Tuakana induction excursion

Tula’i was privileged to host our second Tuakana Leadership Excursion with this year’s Tula’i Ngāue Tuakana vaka in Paihia, Bay of Islands, with the goals of grounding our Tuakana in the importance of Te Tiriti o Waitangi whilst building and developing their connections and skills. It was a fulfilling and humbling experience that provided a valuable opportunity for our leaders to strengthen their skills in leadership, facilitation, and cultural competency.

Despite challenging weather conditions in Northland, our Tuakana leaders persevered and engaged wholeheartedly in workshops designed to prepare them for the delivery of Tula’i Ngāue 2026. Our training focussed on developing the strengths and capabilities of our Tuakana, which planted seeds of courage and growth as they explored their leadership roles and skills. A key highlight was our Facilitation workshop, where Tuakana were challenged to deliver one of our core organisational values using their own methods of engagement—a powerful moment that showcased their eagerness, creativity, and commitment, while also allowing space for meaningful feedback and development.

The team also enjoyed moments of fellowship and bonding at our accommodation through team‑building activities and games, creating space for new connections and strengthened relationships.

On the final day, the sun returned, allowing us to visit the Waitangi Treaty Grounds—a first for many of our Tuakana leaders. Through the guided experience, they gained insight into the significance of the Treaty signing and its impact on Ngā Puhi. The visit highlighted the importance of deepening Pasifika youth understanding of Te Tiriti in order to maintain le vā with tangata whenua.

This three‑day excursion proved to be one of learning, growth, fellowship, and shared memories. We extend our heartfelt thanks to our Tuakana leaders for their dedication and service, ensuring that Tula’i Ngāue will be an exceptional experience for our upcoming cohort. We also acknowledge our staff, Claudia from the NZ Police Pacific Responsiveness Team, and our mentors Drewzilla and Jess for their support throughout the excursion.
