2025 tuakana passing on the baton: Acknowledging our 2025 tuakana

It is a privilege to facilitate the Tuakana Teine model of reciprocal relationships and leadership development within Tula’i. As part of our internal model, we facilitate a maximum of 3 years of Tuakana service and development to ensure our young people extend their reach and potential beyond Tula’i, and to provide opportunities for new Tula’i Ngāue alumni to continue to learn and develop.

Recently, we facilitated this “passing of the baton” through our Fa’aula values by gifting an Ula from a departing Tuakana to the new Tuakana, whilst they shared their own words of encouragement for the new cohort. This new “passing of the baton” not only reflects our values, but is also reflected in our name and in our logo. This idea was suggested by one of our 2025 Tuakana Tuvale and we are grateful for the continued input of our young people that continues to shape how we grow.

Farewell to some of our 2025 Tuakana

The saying “Mā te tuakana e tōtika te teina, mā te teina e tōtika te tuakana” — “From the older sibling the younger one learns the right way to do things, and from the younger sibling the older one learns to be tolerant” — perfectly reflects the passion and drive of our 2025 Tuakana Vaka.

Our Tuakana were eager to deliver the programme and create a safe, engaging space for Pasifika youth. Senior Tuakana Kulisi Maka captured this spirit:

“I was struck by how grateful the students and parents were for the programme and everyone involved. Every student who walked across that stage reminded me why programmes like Tula’i are so important. It reinforced why I love being like an older sibling to the students and why I value this role so much. Seeing our Pasifika community thrive never stops making me proud and even more committed to being part of it.”

Their impact is evident in the positive feedback from cohorts, the growing interest in joining the Vaka, and the values they modelled through service.

Post the passing of the baton, we farewelled seven outstanding Tuakana leaders as they pursue new aspirations. We thank them for their dedication and tautua, which have left a lasting mark on Tula’i Ngāue.

Fa’afetai le tautua to our first-year Tuakana — Tuvale Mauu, Junior Lito, Delamere Faitala, and Samarah Misiaga — for your growth and commitment. Malo ‘aupito to Shana Taupo for two years of service and heartfelt leadership.

Finally, a special thank-you to Faina Uota and Kulisi Maka for three years of unwavering passion. Your values will continue to inspire generations of Pasifika leaders.
